Uganda is one of the best and most popular destinations for mountain gorilla trekking in Africa, with half of the world’s remaining population of the endangered mountain gorillas. Gorilla trekking and habituation in Uganda ranks among the top tourist attractions in the country, and Africa at large. To most travelers who have visited the mountain gorillas in their natural habitat, an African safari is incomplete without gorilla trekking in any of the gorilla safari destinations.

Where go for a gorilla safari in Uganda?

Inhabiting the largest number of the mountain gorillas in the world, Uganda has two (02) national parks where gorilla trekking activity takes place and these are; – Bwindi and Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

This is the most popular destination for gorilla safaris in Africa, located in South Western part of Uganda, 10 hours drive from Entebbe International airport (EBB), and 50 minutes flight to Kihihi or Kisoro airstrip.

Bwindi Gorilla National Park can also be accessed from Rwanda through Katuna and cyanika boarders. It is only 3-4 hours drive from Kigali International Airport (KGL).

The park currently has 19 habituated gorilla groups available for tourism purposes and among these include;

  1. Mubare (Buhoma sector)
  2. Rushegura (Buhoma sector)
  3. Bitukura (Ruhuja sector)
  4. Oruzogo (Ruhija sector)
  5. Mukiza (Ruhija sector)
  6. Nkuringo (Rushaga sector)
  7. Nshongi (Rushaga sector)
  8. Habinyanja (Buhoma sector)
  9. Kyaguriro (Ruhija sector)
  10. Businjye (Rushaga sector)
  11. Bweza (Rushaga sector)
  12. Kahungye (Rushaga)
  13. Bikingi (Rushaga)
  14. Bushaho (Rushaga) and
  15. Mishaya group (Rushaga) among others.

Each of the above gorilla family is visited by a maximum of 8 persons per day as one way to regulate the number of visitors into the jungle and conserve the gorillas’ natural habitat.

Other activities which tourists can enjoy while in Bwindi National park include bird watching, guided forest walks, Batwa experience, visit local communities and take part in their daily activities such as harvesting, milking, and cooking among others.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

This is the second gorilla safari destination in Uganda, with only one habituated gorilla group known as “Nyakagezi”. The park offers the easiest and the most amazing gorilla experience because, the hike is less strenuous, and the clear bamboo vegetation allows clear pictures and videos.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is located in Southwestern Uganda, 8-10 hours drive from Kampala or Entebbe International airport, and 1 hour flight to Kisoro airstrip.

The park can also be accessed from Rwanda through Katuna and Cyanika boarders, only 3-4 hours drive from Kigali International Airport (KGL).

Besides gorilla trekking, Mgahinga gorilla National park offers other tourist activities such as golden monkey tracking, mountain hiking, bird watching, caves exploration and the Batwa Trail.

Cost of a gorilla safari in Uganda

The price of an-all-inclusive gorilla safari package is determined by a number of factors such as;

  • Type of the vehicle used
  • Accommodation facility
  • Season of travel
  • Safari duration
  • Number of travelers in the group
  1. Type of Vehicle Used
    In Uganda, there is a range is 4×4 vehicles used to drive tourists and charged different prices per day. Among the popular cars include Toyota Rav4, Toyota Prado TX, Nissan Patrol, Land Cruiser V8 and the famous luxurious Safari Land Cruiser Hardtop (7 Seater). The travelers’ budget will determine the type of car to use. For instance, a Toyota Prado Tx is cheaper than Land cruiser V8, and the Land Cruiser V8 is cheaper than the 7 seater Safari land cruiser extended. The price of the car can range from USD35 to USD180 per day depending on the type.
  2. Accommodation facility 
    Both Mgahinga and Bwindi gorilla parks have a wide range of accommodation options, ranging from basic/budget lodges and campsites to Mid-range / deluxe and luxury / high-end lodges. Accommodation rates range from USD10 camping to USD900 per person per night.
  3. Season of travel
    Travelling in high season makes the trip more expensive than travelling in low season! Hotels and car rental agencies offer discounts on their services. Therefore, travelling in low season can make your gorilla safari cheaper.
  4. Safari Duration
    Short gorilla trips are cheaper than long trips. For example, the cost a 3 days gorilla safari is lower than a 4 days trip because, the longer the safari, the more expenses on accommodation, car hire, driver, fuel and extra tourist activities in the destination.
  5. Number of travelers in the group

Cost of the Gorilla Permits in Uganda

For any one to take part in gorilla tracking experience, he or she must posses a gorilla permit. This acts as permission to allow you to join the groups of other travelers on a guided hike to search for the Mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.

As earlier noted that each gorilla group is visited by a maximum of 8 visitors per day, the demand for gorilla permits is very high through out the year, and travelers are advised to book early, at least 2 months to the tracking date.

Each gorilla permit in Uganda costs USD700 for foreign non residents, USD600 for foreign residents and Ugx250.000 for Ugandan citizens and East African residents. Gorilla habituation permit on the other hand costs USD1500 per person. Gorilla permits are reserved through tour operators and Uganda Wildlife Authority Headquarters (UWA) at Plot 7, Kira Road, Kampala. Please note, the price of the gorilla permit is NOT negotiable though, some times there comes discounts on the gorilla permits and these are only advertised by the concerned body (UWA).
